MARY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY consists of \u00a0undivided\u00a0nave and chancel, 56 ft. by 18 ft., with modern W.\u00a0porch and N. vestry. The church was extensively restored in\u00a01906. The walls of the nave and chancel seem to have been\u00a0largely rebuilt above sill level and the fenestration is entirely\u00a0modern. The doorways to the nave are round-headed, and\u00a0may be original. That on the W. is off-centre; that to the\u00a0vestry retains a wooden latch-fitting in the E. jamb. The\u00a016th-century trusses have been patched and re-used; they are\u00a0of collar-beam type, arch-braced, strutted and multicusped.\u00a0The roof covering is modern.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fittings.-Books:<\/em> p. cxxxi. <em>Font<\/em> (Plate 35): 15 ins. by 10 ins.\u00a0by 6 ins. deep, hollowed out of a rough boulder and placed on\u00a0modern pedestal; date uncertain, probably medieval. <em>Memorials:\u00a0<\/em>two painted oak memorial panels of the Trygarn\u00a0family: (i) erected by Gruffyth Trygarn of Chester to his\u00a0father Richard Trygarn 1666, his mother Margaret ca. 1653,\u00a0his brother Herbert 1662; above the inscription is a shield of\u00a0arms with mantling, <em>\u00a0vert astag statant arg.<\/em> (Llywarch Hwlbwrch,\u00a0for Trygarn) impaling Collwyn ap Tangno (apparently for\u00a0Lloyd of Rhosgyllfawr); the panel is decorated with cherubs\u00a0at the angles and a border of alternate skulls and cross bones;\u00a0(ii) Gruffyth Trygarn of Trygarn, 1687; above the inscription\u00a0is a shield of arms,<em> quarterly<\/em>, <em>1<\/em> <em>and<\/em> <em>4<\/em> Llywarch Hwlbwrch\u00a0(for Trygarn), <em>2<\/em> and <em>3<\/em> <em>sa. a chevron between three javelin&#8217;s\u00a0heads arg. pointed downwards tipped gules<\/em> (<em>sic<\/em> for Cynwrig\u00a0Sais). Below the shield on either side is <em>a stag&#8217;s head couped<\/em>;\u00a0beneath the border is the inscription &#8216;chester 1694&#8217;. The\u00a0lettering of both panels is black on gold ground. Churchyard,\u00a0(iii) stone to Richard Trygarn of Trygarn, 1732. <em>Panels:<\/em> two\u00a0wooden panels in the same style as the memorials to the\u00a0Trygarn family: (i) Lord&#8217;s Prayer and Apostles&#8217; Creed, dated\u00a01691; (ii) Ten Commandments. <em>Plate:<\/em> (i) Silver chalice with\u00a0tall beaker-shaped bowl flaring slightly at lip, engraved about\u00a0the middle with intersecting bands and conventional foliage,\u00a0on stem with central ring, reeded above and below, egg-and dart\u00a0moulding at edge of foot. Maker&#8217;s mark\u00a0JL in a hollow shaped\u00a0shield (presumably for John Lynglay, of Chester).\u00a0Height 6 and15\/16th ins. (ii) Silver paten-cover, engraved with intersecting\u00a0bands containing double rows of hyphens, sprays of\u00a0foliage at the intersections, and on the foot &#8216;Ano\/1574\/XD&#8217;\u00a0within a circle. Same mark. Diameter 3\u00a0and 3\/8th ins.
