MARY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(1680) THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. MARY (Fig. 97, Plates\u00a025, 37) consists of undivided nave and chancel with a square\u00a0tower at the W. end. The N. porch is later, added when the\u00a0original entrance through a doorway in the W. wall of the\u00a0tower was converted into a window, but apart from this\u00a0the whole structure of the church including its wooden fittings\u00a0appears to be contemporary with the rebuilding recorded\u00a0<em>ca.<\/em> 1825. The walls are of rubble with larger quoin stones.\u00a0All openings have pointed heads. The W. wall of the tower\u00a0contains an eroded freestone tablet apparently dated 1827,\u00a0above which is a circular recess presumably for a clock; the\u00a0top stage forms a belfry, with an opening in each face, and at\u00a0each corner the parapet rises to a pinnacle. The nave and\u00a0chancel have two two-light windows on the N. and S., and an\u00a0E. window of three lights with contemporary stained glass.\u00a0The roof is slated and carried on arch-braced collar-beam\u00a0trusses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1680.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26\" alt=\"1680\" src=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1680.jpg\" width=\"488\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1680.jpg 488w, http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1680-300x248.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Fittings.<\/em>-Books: see p. cxxxvii.<em> Communion Rails:<\/em> with\u00a0pointed arcade, ca 1825. <em>Font<\/em> (Plate 25): decahedral stone with\u00a0circular basin, probably medieval, on modem base. Alemorial\u00a0(Plate 37): interior, loose, slate tablet to Elin Wynne, Saython,\u00a0wife ofJohn Parry of Nevin, 1679. <em>Plate:<\/em> Silver paten-cover,\u00a0with London date-letter for 1679; 4.2 ins. diameter. <em>Pulpit,\u00a0Reading Desk,<\/em> and arcaded <em>Screen,<\/em> all of <em>ca.<\/em> 1825. <em>The Weathervane<\/em>,\u00a0a square-rigged ship in full sail, was renewed about 1950,\u00a0but is a careful copy.<\/p>\n<p>The church was held by the Augustinian Canons of Haughmond Abbey\u00a0from the 12th century,  and a prior of Nefyn\u00a0is recorded in 1252. The fields S.E. of the church are called\u00a0Bryn Mynach and Cae Mynach in the Tithe Award Schedules,\u00a0and foundations are said to exist there, particularly beneath the\u00a0slightly raised area, 50 yds.
