BEUNO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(1694) THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. BEUNO (Fig. 103,\u00a0plates II, 19, 24, 25) is a small undivided structure, built of\u00a0local rubble with modern slate roof. The late 12th-century\u00a0font is noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p>The W. part of the fabric (Plate II) may be contemporary\u00a0with the font although it has no early features.  An extension\u00a0to the E. is suggested by the boulder plinth on the N. exposed\u00a0by recent lowering of the floor, extending 16 ft. W. of the\u00a0N.E. corner; there is a slight change of build also. The church\u00a0has been twice restored, and the internal plaster recently\u00a0removed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1694.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56\" alt=\"1694\" src=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1694.jpg\" width=\"473\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1694.jpg 473w, http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/nefyn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/1694-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The E. window is modem, with square wooden frame and\u00a0glazing bars and modem stone lintel, though the jambs are\u00a0earlier. The two S. windows are modem, one being contained\u00a0in the original S. doorway, now blocked; there are narrow\u00a0original lights towards the E. of both N. and S. walls, the S.\u00a0one now blocked.<\/p>\n<p>The W. door (Plate 19) has a poorly formed four-centred\u00a0head and was inserted probably in the 15th century. The tall\u00a0narrow bell-cote and buttresses on the W. gable are modem.<\/p>\n<p>The roof (Plate 24) consists of five plain arch-braced collarbeam\u00a0trusses, with original purlins and rafters. A sixth truss\u00a0against the W. wall has gone and the purlins of this bay are<br \/>\nmodem. The eastern bay shows traces of a former canopy.\u00a0In the three central bays the original horizontal panelling\u00a0remains between the wall plate and lowest purlin.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fittings.<\/em>-Bell: 1735. Books: for register, see p. cxxxviii.<br \/>\n<em>Font<\/em> (Plate 25): Gritstone, of truncated conical form on a\u00a0modem circular base. The basin is 1 ft. 2.5 ins. high, 1 ft. 10.5 ins.\u00a0in diameter at top, and 2 ft. 2 ins. at base. Internally it is1<span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0ft.\u00a0<\/span>4.5 ins. in maximum diameter, and 9.5 ins. deep; it has a central\u00a0drain-hole. The inclined face has a scalloped rim and rollmoulded\u00a0base, and is decorated in relief by a single overlapping\u00a0ring chain threaded by a horizontal band, all formed by a\u00a0double row of beading. Probably late 12th-century. <em>Paintings<\/em>:\u00a0in chancel, fragmentary and indecipherable. On the N. wall\u00a0there appear to be &#8216;patterns containing areas of red, and on the\u00a0E. there is a fragmentary black-letter inscription in Welsh.\u00a0Probably 16th- or 17th-century.<em>Plate:<\/em> Silver chalice with\u00a0beaker-shaped bowl on baluster stem with splayed foot.\u00a0Marks illegible, probably <em>ca<\/em>. 1640. Height 5.8 ins., diameter\u00a03 ins. There is no trace of the pewter dish and flagon mentioned\u00a0in some late 18th-century terriers.
