AELIW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. AELIW (OR AELRHIW)\u00a0(Fig. 108, Plates 12, 40), stands on the eastern side of\u00a0Mynydd Rhiw, well to the N. of the modern village. The\u00a0building has boulder-built walls and a modern slate roof.\u00a0The structure is of one build, probably of the 18th century\u00a0but on the footings of an earlier church, perhaps transeptal.<br \/>\nThe present unusual plan is the same as that described in the\u00a0earliest terrier, of 1776. It consists of a small nave and a short\u00a0chancel of equal width, with relatively large transepts or\u00a0aisles to N. and S. In the E. and W. end walls are indications of\u00a0earlier openings at a lower level. The roof trusses and furnishings\u00a0belong to extensive restoration in 1860-1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/rhiw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1723.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-24\" src=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/rhiw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1723.jpg\" alt=\"1723\" width=\"367\" height=\"562\" srcset=\"http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/rhiw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1723.jpg 367w, http:\/\/crwydro.co.uk\/rhiw\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/1723-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 367px) 100vw, 367px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fittings.-<em>Books:<\/em> for registers see p. cxxxviii. <em>Chest:<\/em> plain,\u00a0inscribed 1715\/ W \/ RH\/ W I ; 18th century. <em>Memorial:<\/em> slab,\u00a0re-set against inner face of W. wall, to Lowry, daughter\u00a0of Thomas ap Richard of Bodwythog, 1674, also her husband\u00a0Frederick Wynne of Bodvean; above, a shield-of-arms,\u00a0Collwyn ap Tangno (for Wynne of Boduan), with crescent\u00a0for difference, and a skull and cross-bones.<em> Plate:<\/em> (i) Silver\u00a0cup, plain straight-sided bowl inscribed &#8216;Rhiw \/ This was<br \/>\nprovided by \/\u00a0Fredericke Wynne Warden\u00a0\/\u00a0Anno Dni 1672&#8217;;\u00a0maker&#8217;s mark GB and London date-letter for 1671-2; height\u00a06 ins.
